Esidrix is a 'water pill' (diuretic) that causes you to make more urine. This helps your body get rid of extra salt and water. It is used to treat high blood pressure and fluid retention. Lowering high blood pressure helps prevent strokes, heart attacks, and kidney problems. It works by increasing the amount of salt and water that the kidneys remove from the blood. This extra salt and water is passed out through the urine. By increasing the amount of water removed from the blood, Esidrix causes a decrease in blood volume. Because of this effect, Esidrix can lower blood pressure and help with water retention.
Directions
Take Esidrix exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Take this medication by mouth, usually once daily in the morning with or without food. It is best to avoid taking this medication within 4 hours of your bedtime to prevent having to get up to urinate. The recommended starting dose for treating of high blood pressure is hydrochlorothiazide 25 mg once daily. The dosage may be increased up to 50 mg per day. The recommended dose for fluid retention (edema) can vary between 25 mg and 100 mg daily (taken as a single dose or divided and taken more frequently).
Precautions
Before taking Esidrix you should talk with your doctor if you have liver disease, cirrhosis, kidney disease, kidney failure, diabetes, systemic lupus erythematosus, angioedema, gout, pancreatitis, high cholesterol, asthma, fluid or electrolyte problems, parathyroid problems, sympathectomy, any allergies. Let your doctor know if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Severe sweating, diarrhea, or vomiting can increase the risk for a serious loss of body water (dehydration). Drink plenty of fluids. This drug may make you dizzy. Do not drive or perform tasks that require alertness. Older adults may be more sensitive to the effects of this drug.
Contraindications
You should not take Esidrix if you are allergic to hydrochlorothiazide, any inactive component of the medication or sulfa drugs.
Possible side effect
Get emergency medical help if you have upset stomach, diarrhea, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, headache, muscle cramps, weakness, irregular heartbeat, unusual decreased urination, unusual dry mouth, thirst, decrease in vision, eye pain, rash, itching, swelling of the face, tongue, throat, trouble breathing, sensitivity to the sun, hair loss. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor.
Drug interactions
Tell your doctor about all other medications you use, especially: lithium, cholestyramine, barbiturates (butabarbital, pentobarbital, phenobarbital), narcotics (codeine, morphine, oxycodone), colestipol, muscle relaxants (tubocurarine), corticosteroids (hydrocortisone, prednisone, dexamethasone), norepinephrine, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (naproxen, ibuprofen, celecoxib, meloxicam, diclofenac). Interaction between two medications does not always mean that you must stop taking one of them. Tell your doctor about all prescription, over-the-counter, and herbal medications you are taking.
Missed dose
Take the missed dose as soon as possible. Skip the missed dose if it is time for your next scheduled dose. Don't take extra medicine to make up the missed dose.
Overdose
If you think you have overdosed the medicine seek emergency medical help at once. The overdose symptoms are severe dizziness, weakness, fainting.
Storage
Store the medicine at room temperature between 59-77 degrees F (15-25 degrees C) away from light and moisture. Do not store the drugs in the bathroom. Keep all drugs away from reach of children and pets.
