Prevacid belongs to a group of drugs called proton pump inhibitors. The drug decreases the amount of acid produced in the stomach. It is used to treat and prevent stomach and intestinal ulcers, erosive esophagitis (damage to the esophagus from stomach acid), and other conditions involving excessive stomach acid such as Zollinger-Ellison syndrome.
Directions
Take Prevacid exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Prevacid is usually taken before eating, at the same time daily. Follow your doctor's instructions. Do not crush or break a delayed-release Prevacid capsule. Swallow it whole. If you are unable to swallow a delayed-release capsule whole: Open the capsule and sprinkle the medicine into a spoonful of pudding, applesauce, yogurt, cottage cheese, strained pears, or a nutritional drink such as Ensure.
To make sure you get the entire dose, add a little more water to the same glass, swirl gently and drink right away. In case of using Prevacid with sucralfate, wait at least 30 minutes after taking this medicine before you take sucralfate.
Precautions
You should not use Prevacid if you are allergic to the drugs components or have liver illness. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant during treatment. Do not use Prevacid if you are breast-feeding a baby.
Contraindications
Before using the medicine, tell your doctor if you have allergic reaction to the drug's components, amoxicillin or clarithromycin.
Possible side effect
Get emergency medical help if you have any of allergic reaction to Prevacid, have constipation or diarrhea. Call your doctor for medical advice about side effects.
Drug interaction
Tell your doctor about all medications you use as there are not so much drugs that can provoke side effects.
Missed dose
Take the missed dose as soon as possible. Skip the missed dose if it is time for your next scheduled dose. Do not take extra medicine to make up the missed dose.
Overdose
Call emergency medical attention if you think you have used too much of this medicine.
Storage
Store your medicines at room temperature between between 15-30 C (59-86 F). Store away from moisture and light. Don't store it in the bathroom.
