Prinivil belongs to a class of medications called ACE inhibitors. It is used to treat high blood pressure and congestive heart failure. It works by relaxing blood vessels and helping the heart to pump blood that carries oxygen to the different parts of the body more efficiently. It is also used immediately after a heart attack in order to reduce the risk of having another heart attack.
Directions
Take Prinivil exactly as prescribed by your doctor. The recommended adult dose ranges from 2.5 mg to 40 mg daily, depending on the condition being treated. For children, the dosage is based on weight. It is taken in one daily dose with or without food. People who take other medications that lower blood pressure (e.g., diuretics) or people who have kidney disease may need lower doses. Take it at the same time each day. It is important to continue taking this medication even if you feel well.
Precautions
Before taking Prinivil you should talk with your doctor if you have heart disease, including congestive heart failure, aortic stenosis, or hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, liver or kidney disease, cirrhosis, diabetes, connective tissue disease (lupus, scleroderma, or rheumatoid arthritis), angioedema, any allergies. Be sure to drink enough fluids to prevent dehydration. Do not use salt substitutes or potassium supplements while taking Prinivil. This drug may make you dizzy. Do not drive or perform tasks that require alertness. Avoid drinking alcohol. It can further lower your blood pressure and may increase some of the side effects. Older adults may be more sensitive to the effects of this product.
Contraindications
Do not take Prinivil if you are allergic to lisinopril or to any of the ingredients of the medication, pregnant, breastfeeding, or if you have angioedema after taking any ACE inhibitors.
Possible side effect
Get emergency medical help if you have cough, diarrhea, headache, loss of taste, nausea, unusual tiredness, abdominal pain, abdominal distention, fever, vomiting, chest pain, dizziness, lightheadedness, fainting, confusion, irregular heartbeat, nervousness, numbness, shortness of breath, weakness, skin rash, itching, fever, joint pain, hoarseness, swelling of face, mouth, yellow eyes or skin. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor.
Drug interactions
Tell your doctor about all other medications you use, especially: diuretics (furosemide, hydrochlorothiazide, torsemide), nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (ibuprofen, naproxen, diclofenac, meloxicam), medications that lower blood pressure (beta-blockers), aspirin, lithium, diabetes medicines (metformin, glyburide), potassium supplements (K-Dur, Klor-Con). Interaction between two medications does not always mean that you must stop taking one of them. Tell your doctor about all prescription, over-the-counter, and herbal medications you are taking.
Missed dose
Take the missed dose as soon as possible. Skip the missed dose if it is time for your next scheduled dose. Don't take extra medicine to make up the missed dose.
Overdose
If you think you have overdosed the medicine seek emergency medical help at once. The overdose symptoms are severe dizziness, fainting.
Storage
Store the medicine at room temperature between 59-77 degrees F (15-25 degrees C) away from light and moisture. Do not store the drugs in the bathroom. Keep all drugs away from reach of children and pets.
