Tegopen (Cloxacillin) is a penicillinase-resistant, acid resistant, semi-synthetic penicillin. It works via inhibiting formation of the bacteria cell walls. Cloxacillin is effective in the treatment of beta-hemolytic streptococcal and pneumococcal infections as well as staphylococcal infections. It is indicated to moderate symptoms of such diseases as staphylococcal skin infections and cellulitis, including impetigo, otitis externa, folliculitis, boils, carbuncles, and mastitis, pneumonia (adjunct), osteomyelitis, septic arthritis, throat infections, septicaemia, empirical treatment for endocarditis, urinary tract diseases. It prevents complications on transplantation of skin graft.
Directions
Take this medication exactly as your doctor has prescribed it. Determine a proper dosage that best suits your condition. You must carefully follow all directions given to you. Avoid exceeding your dose or taking the medication longer than it was advised by your doctor. This medication is not chewed, crushed or broken while taking. You should take it on an empty stomach swallowing it whole with a full glass of water. If you feel better after a few days of the treatment, you should still continue taking this medicine. It is important to complete the full course. Generally the standard recommended dosage for adults covers 500 mg taken four times daily. There should be a strict adjustment of the dosage in case this medicine is prescribed for children under 2 years old. Avoid drinking juice or carbonated beverages such as soda. These beverages are able to decrease the effectiveness of the drug.
Precautions
Before taking Tegopen tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to penicillins. This product may contain inactive ingredients, which can cause allergic reactions. This medication is prescribed cautiously if you anamnesis contains a history of severe kidney disease, intestinal disease (colitis), peptic or intestinal ulcer, diabetes. Avoid drinking alcohol while being treated with Tegopen as it may cause aggravation of the symptoms. Follow your doctor's instructions about the type and amount of liquids, meals, food supplements and other medications you are allowed to take.
Contraindications
Tegopen is contraindicated in patients showing hypersensitivity to any component of the medicine and other penicillins. This medication is administered cautiously in pregnant and breastfeeding women, patients that suffer from malnutrition, children that are under 12 years old unless directed by pediatrician.
Possible side effect
Most regular side effects include: nausea, vomiting, bloody or watery diarrhea, abdominal stomach cramps, heartburn, colitis, vaginal discharge, allergic reactions such as rash or hives, swelling of face, lips, eyelids, tongue, throat, difficulty in swallowing, difficulty breathing, skin itching, vaginal itching, seizures (epileptic fits), agitation, mental confusions, black and hairy tongue, bleeding or bruising. This is not a complete list of all possible side effects. Others may occur in some people and there may be some side effects not known yet. In case you have experienced any side effect not listed above, immediately notify your doctor or local poison centre.
Drug interactions
In case you are not confident whether this medicinal product is compatible with other medicines or supplements, discuss it with your doctor or pharmacist. It is not advisable to combine the usage of this product with other drugs of similar class without your doctor’s permission as it may result in a serious aggravation. Generally Tegopen is able to interact with cholestyramine (Questran); colestipol (Colestid); another antibiotics such as erythromycin (Ery-Tab, E-Mycin, E.E.S., others), tetracycline (Sumycin, others), minocycline (Minocin), doxycycline (Doryx, Vibramycin, others). Cloxacillin decreases the effectiveness of birth control remedies. Therefore you should use an additional method of contraception while being treated with taking Cloxacillin to prevent an undesired pregnancy. Cloxacillin increases the effects of methotrexate, so you should adjust your dose while taking Cloxacillin. Cloxacillin is able to increase the side effects of allopurinol (Zyloprim) and cause a rash.
Probenecid (Benemid) increases the effects of cloxacillin. These drugs may be used together for this purpose; however, be sure your doctor is aware if you are taking probenecid. You may need a lower dose of cloxacillin.
Missed dose
In case you have missed to take a dose of this medication, take it as soon as possible. If you are already supposed to take the next dose, do not take the dose you forgot and keep your ordinary dosing schedule. Do not take two dosages right away.
Overdose
If you suspect you have used too much of this medication, seek emergency medical attention right away. Do this even if there are no signs of discomfort or poisoning. You may need urgent medical attention. Symptoms of overdose include: fatigue, seizures, diarrhea, nausea, emesis, coma, agitation, fingers’ numbness, pain or twitching, anaphylactic shock. If any of these effects persist or worsen, notify your doctor or pharmacist promptly.
Storage
This medication is stored in a cool dry place at temperature between 15-25 C (59-77 F), away from sources of sunlight, heat and moisture. Do not store this drug in the bathroom. Keep this product out of the reach of children and pets. The suspension should be applied within 14 days provided you store it in the refrigerator. Do not apply remains of the suspension after the term is over.
