XALATAN is an eyedrop aimed to lower pressure in the eye. It has an active component called latanoprost (a prostaglandin F2α analogue) that helps to reduce the intraocular pressure. It increases the outflow of aqueous humour. The intraocular pressure is reduced about three to four hours after Xalatan was applied and the maximum effect is reached after eight to twelve hours.
Directions
This medication is taken only according with doctor’s prescription. Use one drop to the eye in the evening.
Precautions
Xalatan is able to change the eyelids’ color, it provokes eyelash changes by increasing their length, changing their thickness, causing pigmentation, changing a number of lashes; it can cause eyelid skin darkening; it may also provoke iritis and uveitis; iris pigmentation changes; macular edema.
Contraindications
Xalatan is contraindicated in patients displaying hypersensitivity to one of its ingredients. In case you are pregnant, plan to be pregnant, or nursing, avoid taking this medication and consult your doctor.
Possible side effect
The include blurred vision, increased pigmentation of the iris, blood shot eyes, burning, foreign body sensation, inflammatory disease of cornea, itching, upper inflammatory infection, stinging.
Drug interactions
Xalatan is able to interact with other types of eye drops that have thiomersal in their formula. In general you can take other types of ophthalmologic medicines to reduce intraocular pressure; however there should be an interval of 5 minutes between the usages. Benzalkonium chloride is an ingredient of Xalatan that can be absorbed by contact lenses, so before you apply these eye drops take your lenses off and wear it in 15 minutes after the usage of the medication.
Missed dose
In case you have missed to take the prescribed dose of this drug, take it as soon as possible. If you are already supposed to take your next dose, do not take the dose you forgot and keep your ordinary dosage schedule. Avoid compensating a missed dose by taking an extra one.
Overdose
If you suspect overdosing, immediately seek medical attention or notify your health care professional. Symptoms of overdosing involve bloodshot or irritation of the eyes.
Storage
This medicine is stored unopened in the refrigerator. If the medicine is opened, it should be kept at room temperature for 6 weeks away from light, heat, moisture. Avoid storing the drug in the bathroom. Keep all drugs away from reach of children and pets. Do not use in case the expiry date is over.
