Zestoretic is a combination product containing 2 medications: lisinopril and hydrochlorothiazide. It is used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension). Lowering high blood pressure helps prevent strokes, heart attacks, and kidney problems. Lisinopril is an ACE inhibitor and works by relaxing blood vessels so that blood can flow more easily. Hydrochlorothiazide is a thiazide diuretic that helps prevent your body from absorbing too much salt, which can cause fluid retention. This product is used when one drug is not controlling your blood pressure. This medication may also be used to treat heart failure and to help protect the kidneys from damage due to diabetes.
Directions
Take Zestoretic exactly as prescribed by your doctor. The recommended dosage for people with high blood pressure (hypertension) will typically start at 10 mg/12.5 mg or 20 mg/12.5 mg once a day. This medication can be taken with or without food. Swallow the tablet with water. Lower doses may be used for people who take other medications that lower blood pressure or for people who have kidney disease.
Precautions
Before taking Zestoretic you should talk with your doctor if you have heart disease, congestive heart failure, aortic stenosis, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, liver disease, cirrhosis, kidney disease, kidney failure, diabetes, scleroderma, systemic lupus erythematosus, angioedema (swelling under the skin), gout, high cholesterol, pancreatitis, asthma, fluid or electrolyte problems, any allergies. This drug may make you dizzy. Do not drive or perform tasks that require alertness. Limit alcoholic beverages. Alcohol can increase some of the side effects. Avoid the regular use of salt substitutes in your diet, and do not take potassium supplements. Avoid getting up too fast from a sitting or lying position, or you may feel dizzy. This medication may make you more sensitive to the sun. Avoid prolonged sun exposure, tanning booths, and sunlamps.
Contraindications
Do not take Zestoretic if you are allergic to lisinopril, hydrochlorothiazide, or any ingredients of this medication, to sulfa (sulfonamide) medications, are pregnant or breastfeeding, or if you have difficulty producing urine or are unable to urinate, angioedema after taking any ACE inhibitors, hereditary angioedema or angioedema with no known cause.
Possible side effect
Get emergency medical help if you have slow heart rate, weak pulse, muscle weakness, tingly feeling, confusion, uneven heart rate, extreme thirst, increased urination, leg discomfort, dry mouth, nausea, vomiting, yellowing of the skin or eyes (jaundice), urinating less than usual, feeling short of breath, swelling, weight gain, fever, chills, body aches, hives, swelling of your face, lips, tongue, flu symptoms, dizziness, tired feeling, depressed mood, headache, blurred vision, constipation, upset stomach. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor.
Drug interactions
Tell your doctor about all other medications you use, especially: non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (naproxen, ibuprofen, etodolac, indomethacin, diclofenac), aspirin, lithium, diuretics (furosemide, torsemide, bumetanide), cholestyramine, steroids (prednisone, hydrocortisone, prednisolone), potassium supplements, insulin, barbiturates (butabarbital, pentobarbital, primidone, phenobarbital), narcotics (codeine, morphine, oxycodone), corticotropin, muscle relaxants. Interaction between two medications does not always mean that you must stop taking one of them. Tell your doctor or prescriber about all prescription, over-the-counter, and herbal medications you are taking.
Missed dose
Take the missed dose as soon as possible. Skip the missed dose if it is time for your next scheduled dose. Don't take extra medicine to make up the missed dose.
Overdose
If you think you have overdosed the medicine seek emergency medical help at once. The overdose symptoms are severe dizziness, fainting, dry mouth, thirst, muscle pain or weakness.
Storage
Store the medicine at room temperature between 59-86 degrees F (15-30 degrees C) away from light and moisture. Store it in a tight container. Keep all drugs away from reach of children and pets.
